Are you worried that your HVAC repair is going to cost you a lot of money? Depending on the problem, it may not be as bad as you think. While repairs can be expensive, you have a lot of options, and some of these are often very reasonable.

If you have a good idea of what the problem is, you may be able to estimate the price of repair. Below, we discuss the HVAC repair cost and break it down into easy to calculate segments.

    What Is the Average Cost?

The average cost of repairs on an HVAC system going into 2021 cost around $250 dollars. This obviously fluctuates, depending on location and the size of the problem. However, for new filters, unclogging and rebooting the system and the labor costs of a professional, you will be looking at sums in this area.

    HVAC Repair Cost per Hour

An HVAC system is a complicated machine. It has circuits that are high and low voltage. In addition, an incorrectly operating or malfunctioning HVAC system can cause illness, such as deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.

In essence, it is a skilled job. An HVAC company will most likely charge you a call-out fee to check the system and give you a diagnostic check. This will then have any labor and parts costs added to the fee.

A basic service call can vary vastly and can be anything between $80 to $300. Hourly wages can run from $65 to $125 per hour.

    Unit Costs

HVAC systems and AC units have a wide range of complexities. Some are much easier to fix than others, and as such, they are priced accordingly. The most expensive of these will be a ductless mini-split, which can average between $800 to $900 for a repair.

Central and portable AC units can come in between $100 to $500. the cheapest unit to repair is a window AC unit at $25 to $125.

    Types of Repair

Repairing parts can cost less than doing outright replacements, so you should schedule regular maintenance and repair the parts that the technician recommends. There are a lot of different types of repairs that you may encounter.

The most expensive repairs will be coil and freon leaks, followed by compressor and fan fixes. Leaks can be anything up to $2000 to repair. Compressors and fan motors will be around $450 to $1000, with fan repairs being on the cheaper end.

All other repairs should come in under $300. These may include outside unit cleaning, refrigerant replacements, clogged drain, and air filter cleaning along with a number of other repairs.

    Replacement Part Costs

Replacement parts are often not as bad as people imagine. At the top end, you want to try to avoid a compressor and evaporator coil replacements, as they can cost up to $2500. In the mid range, circuit boards, blowers and fan motors will be anything between $100 to $700 depending on the part and manufacturer.

Finally, fuses, relays, and thermostats are fairly cheap. If you want upgraded models, you can go higher in the hundreds of dollars margin, but this is personal preference.

    Get Professional Help

While routine maintenance can be done yourself, the HVAC repair cost can be kept to a minimum with a regular professional service. Add it to your home maintenance schedule once a year, and your system will last longer.
