According to HomeAdvisor, it can cost about $1,150 to redo the lighting in your kitchen.

If you’re going to redo the lighting, make sure that you research all of the types of kitchen lights to ensure you’re happy with your purchase.

But what are some of the most popular types? Thankfully, we can break it all down for you right here, so keep reading!

    Recessed Lights

One of the most common types of kitchen lighting is recessed lighting. You can use this for task areas or just for general lighting of your kitchen.

The standard size for recessed lights is about six inches in diameter, and you can use it for all kinds of things. For the best results, you should space them between five to six feet apart. If you want focalized lighting for a task area, you may want to place them closer together.

There are plenty of options when you buy them. You could get certain trims on them which can help to reduce glare with the light.

There are also plenty of different light bulbs you can choose from as well, including LED to help you save money on your electricity bill.

    Accent Lighting

If you want to highlight something in your kitchen, you can use accent lighting. This is also a great touch to help decorate your kitchen a little bit.

With accent lighting, the glow from the light can be diffused throughout the whole kitchen so that you can see everything.

For example, you could get a strip of accent lights and place them underneath your cabinets to help provide some mood lighting for the counters. Some people also add them under the counters to help keep you from running into the cabinets.

Many people also like to install them in the pantry so that you don’t have to struggle to find the ingredients you need. However, if you’re going to put a light in your pantry, make sure you get one that has a low wattage so you don’t heat up all your food.

    Surface Lights

Surface lights come in all kinds of different sizes and shapes.

These lights only sit on the surface of something, so you won’t have to worry about breaking into your walls and ceilings and trying to wire everything up.

The surface lights can light up a wide area, but you’ll need a larger bulb in order for it to do that.

These ones are different from recessed lights, and they’re also easier to clean. With recessed lighting, the dust can hide in places that you don’t’ see, which means that it can be difficult to get to.

However, some people don’t like these light fixtures because they are still a visible installation that is on the ceiling. Some people think that it makes the room feel smaller and breaks up the vast expanse visual in the kitchen.

    Task Lighting

There are plenty of different ways to bring task lighting into your kitchen design. You can place this over an area where you normally spend most of your time. For example, if you have a desk in the kitchen, you might want to put some lighting up there.

You could also place them over the sink or wherever you prepare food.

However, when you place it, make sure that you analyze where you’re putting it. You want to make sure that the light doesn’t accidentally cast any shadows, which can make you misjudge where you’re cutting food.

Most task lighting is permanent, so make sure you experiment with the placement first.

    Pendant Lights

Lastly, pendant lights are a special type of surface light. One of the main reasons people install these is because they can light the area closer to the counter. This is great if you need better visibility in an area.

Some people also use pendant lights as a type of task lighting, but it doesn’t have to be.

A lot of people put these types of lights over a kitchen island as they’ve become more and more popular and attractive in kitchen designs.

Most of them have a metal shade around the bulb, and if you look at it from underneath, you’ll see the bulb exposed to make sure you get the best lighting.

Some people may not like these because they do hang right from the ceiling. In some cases, they can get in the way or you could even hit your head on them.

To prevent this, make sure that you don’t put them in a place where people normally walk. You should also make sure that your ceiling is over eight feet high so that no one hits their head on them.

If you have low ceilings, these lights may not be the best option for you.

In addition to that, you’ll also have to regularly clean them since you’ll be able to easily see the dust that collects on them.
